The Art of Being a Chiropractor

By

Expert Author John S Kyneur
A lot of research doesn't sit well with chiropractic because it isn't a lab. It isn't something you can simply dissect in a laboratory. And many of the results are somewhat subjective. The patient feels better. The pain is less. Though there are x-rays and leg-length checks that can be made.
The Art of Chiropractic
So what is the art of chiropractic?
To the observer, it is a spinal manipulation procedure. Which basically means you are handling someone's joints, mainly in the spine. Although chiropractors look at other joints too.
Because of the practice philosophy of chiropractic, the spine is more important because it houses the brain and spinal cord. All the nerves flow from the spine. And the nerves control the organs and muscles.
In defining the art there is actually a difference between manipulation and adjustment. These two terms get interchanged in some circles but they are not the same thing.
Manipulation
A manipulation is not chiropractic!
This may shock you at first, but it is true.
A manipulation infers that the practitioner is moving a joint without consequence of position or direction. This means that the person is trying to mobilise a joint.
So if a drawer is jammed, and you give it a push and shove, you are actually manipulating the drawer and its fitting!
It's stuck. You unstick it.
Adjustment
Chiropractors have always preferred this term. It means that the direction of alignment is taken into consideration. You are correcting a joint in its relationship with other joints in a certain plane.
Chiropractors call the misalignment of the spine a "listing." By this we mean, one bone in relationship to the other can be posterior to the left, which is how it's rotated. It can be posterior to the left and tilted down (called posterior left inferior), and so on.
It got even more precise than this after the work of Drs John Grostic and Al Wermsing in the 30's and 40's.
They started to list the skull and atlas (the top spinal bone) in terms of degrees of displacement as determined by x-ray. In this you may have for example, a Right 2 degrees over a Left 2 degrees, skull to atlas misalignment.
In the 1980's Dr Don Harrison from Wyoming, working with Dr Harry Wong, wanted to find out more about the Grostic style listings in degrees.
They determined that head-to-shoulder postures were the cause of the degree misalignments.
Patterns such as rotations, tilts, and side and forward head carriage produced the various angles that Grostic practitioners had been observing for 40 years.
A Grostic "against the kink" was a rotation and "into the kink" a side bend. There's also a third type where the head side-tilts on the first vertebra (atlas) only.
Manual
The Art of Chiropractic involves the manual procedures, dexterity and skill learnt out of chiropractic college. In some colleges they use half-tyres to develop the muscle action required.
There is another thing called a speeder board, which helps for recoil movement.
In modern days, instruments (such as blocks and activators) are used. These require an awareness from the practitioner in positioning depth.
All of them require a sensitivity from the chiropractor, and this is why it is an art.
It's okay to have science, but a lot of it is feel. A lot of it is intention, a lot of it is care.

December 21, 2012 - End of the Mayan Calendar

By

Expert Author Angela Vaughan-Clark
December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of the Mayan calendar, is it really the end of time? We seem to hear this question a lot these days. Consciousness Shift, Galactic Alignment, Procession of the Equinoxes, Winter Solstice, Mayan Calender, Cosmic Cross, The End days, Prophesies, Pole Shift, December 21, 2012... What in the world is going on?
December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of the Mayan Calendar
One thing is certain, something big is happening on December 21, 2012 the Winter Solstice, it seems to correspond to the End of the Mayan Calendar and what looks like could be the end of time as we know it. Is this merely coincidence, a fairy tale or is there significance to all of the talk.
In my over 25 years of working with Singing Bowls, healing energy and human evolution... I have learned that coincidence is a very valuable road sign on the path of life. Most things do not happen without a higher divine purpose, especially when something gets so much attention and has so much evidence that points in a direction. December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of the Mayan Calendar seems to be one of those times.
Winter Solstice...
The time of the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2012 undoubtedly lines up with what appears to be the End of the Mayan Calender. This amazing time also lines up with prophesies that many cultures have foretold. The speculation is that the End of the Mayan Calendar foretells the end of life as we currently know it. Many view this as the end of the world or a great shift in human consciousness. Perhaps both are true!
End of the Mayan Calendar...
The End of the Mayan Long Count Calendar known as the Tzolkin (divine calendar), does happen on December 21, 2012... the Winter Solstice. The Long Count Calendar spans 5125.36 years. This is remarkable considering that the lifespan of the average Mayan is said to be less than 80 years. The development of the Mayan Calendar system is unprecedented. Their calendar is more advanced than anything we use today.
The ancient Mayan civilization lived in Central America between 300 and 1200 AD. They were an advanced civilization, a nation of indigenous people, not to be confused with a tribe. They pointed to December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of the Mayan Calendar as being the end of time.
Their advanced culture was known for their amazing feats of engineering, mathematics, architecture and writing. They built magnificent pyramids and kept accurate records that see to speak even to the future. They are especially known for unbelievable time keeping capabilities.
How did they do this without the technologies of our world?
Mysteriously, the Mayans seemed to disappear. Some experts speculate that there was a climate change and possible loss of food supply and water. Where did they go... even today, no one knows for sure exactly why the Mayans left or where most of the population of 22,000,000 went.
Some of the speculation of what happened to the Mayan culture sounds all to close to what many say may happen to us on December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of the Mayan Calendar.
Why December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice as the End of the Mayan Calendar Cycle?
End of times or Consciousness Shift?
It hasn't JUST been the Mayans who have prophesied about the changes to come... end of times and a shift in consciousness for humanity. Even the Christian Bible speaks of this in the book of revelations. The hidden meaning and wisdom of this time has been talked about for centuries. There are numerous examples of many different cultures and traditions pointing to a deeper meaning in what is happening now.
Author John Major Jenkins says in his book, "My new book, Galactic Alignment: Transformation of Consciousness According to Mayan, Egyptian, and Vedic Traditions (Inner Traditions, 2002) shows how this galactic knowledge is a hidden layer of wisdom that can be found in many traditions around the world. It can be identified in Islamic astrology, Greek sacred topography, South American traditions, Christian religious architecture, Mithraism, Neoplatonic thought, as well as Vedic and Egyptian cosmology. It seems that as we become immersed in the galactic alignment, the ancient wisdom itself is returning, is being rediscovered, to initiate a new era... "
Is this all coincidence or is it a Divine Plan...
The Galactic Alignment...
December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of Mayan calendar also corresponds to a happening known as the Galactic Alignment. This is an event that only occurs every 26,000 years (a platonic year). The winter solstice sun, (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth), falls into line with the "equator" of the Milky Way Galaxy. This alignment is a result of the famous precession of the equinoxes. The equinoxes and solstices apparently move slightly every 71.5 years because of a wobble as the earth rotates on its axis. The December Winter Solstice which we are fast approaching takes 36 years to move through the Galactic Center of our galaxy.
Within this 26,000 year cycle there is another cycle 13,000 years of darkness and 13,000 years of light. Traditional doctrines talk about this in terms of light and dark periods of spirituality. Over 12,000 years ago we were said to have experienced one of these periods of light consciousness and have been moving into a darker and darker period ever since. The culmination of that darkness is said to happen on the December Winter Solstice 2012. It will be the darkest Solstice of them all. Think of this cycle as day and night. we are about to see the light of a new day!
I marvel that Over 2,000 years ago the early Maya saw that the sun, on the Winter Solstice, was slowly moving toward the heart of the galaxy and that this would reach center on the Winter Solstice 2012. This Galactic Alignment surely has profound meaning.
It is hard to imagine all of this but this diagram seems to show what is happening with the wobble on December 21, 2012.
December 21, 2012... Winter Solstice... The End of the Mayan Calendar is fast approaching...
The End of the Mayan Calendar is about to happen and the Galactic Alignment will take place. What does that mean for us? No one seems to really know. According to the Mayan Long Count Calendar, December 21, 2012 is the end of this human civilization.
Many experts agree, the new civilization that we are about to enter into will be very different than the one we now know. So yes it will seem like the end of the world. it is hard to say what will happen with the planet and how the new energies will affect the climate, atmosphere and path of humanity. There is no certain point of reference as we make this shift in consciousness.
The last days of this reality doesn't have to mean destruction and calamity... perhaps it implies new awareness and viewpoints. Certainly the spiritual nature of humanity will blossom in the move towards more light that will be filling our world.
The Time is Now... December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice and the End of the Mayan Calendar happens...
One thing is clear to me... the more we can develop our spiritual birthright of mastery and step into the energy of our own ascension... the easier this crucial shift will be. We all have innate skills and spiritual power that we are meant to bring forward at this time of need.
December 21, 2012 Winter Solstice... End of the Mayan Calendar marks the time as being now to open your heart wide and become the master of your new reality! The Growing Popularity of Internal Medicine Jobs

By

The path to becoming a licensed doctor in the Unites States takes at least 8 years to finish. After this time individuals undergo specialty training to focus on certain areas such as pediatrics, internal medicine, or surgery. Internal medicine deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease in adults. Throughout the years, it has gained popularity and more students of medicine are aiming to eventually be qualified for internal medicine jobs.
Scope of Internal Medicine
A doctor with this degree is called a general internist. He may be a general practitioner or he can opt to develop his expertise further by sub-specializing in specific diseases that affect certain organs of the body. Some of these are in the fields of cardiology (heart), nephrology (kidney), hematology (blood), and infectious diseases. Aside from becoming practicing physicians, internal medicine jobs can also include involvement in areas of research and academia.
Job Description
The job of an internist covers the following: diagnosis of disease through proper physical examinations and laboratory tests, treatment of the diseases and injuries, prevention of disease through regular preventative care, and maintenance of care to the road of recovery.
Since internal medicine jobs also include a role in teaching, you can see a number of doctors who hold a class or two in universities. This is especially true of those who are practicing in a university hospital. Their expertise will help hone the skills of a new generation of doctors.
There are also a growing number of internal medicine specialists focusing in the field of research. As new diseases are discovered, the drive to invent a cure for these is also rising with adequate sponsorship from the public and private sectors. You have seen new breeds of viruses that have created havoc in communities and caused deaths, and researches are pressured to come up with a cure in the least amount of time possible. This makes their role very vital, both in the discovery of new cures and prevention of an epidemic.
High Paying Job
Internal medicine jobs are sought after because of their high demand and the good salary that comes with the profession. As seen throughout the history of the United States, people from the previous decades had a different perspective and situations from today. It was either they were really healthy and did not need the care, or they had a skeptical attitude towards medicine and illnesses and thus stayed away from doctors. Today, more and more people are becoming conscious of their health and go to great measures to prevent acquiring any diseases. At the same time, a large part of the population is suffering from illnesses brought about by current lifestyles, vices, pollution, and eating habits. Both of these have caused the high demand for the care of general internists, which subsequently increased their pay. Comparing the median compensation of internists in 1999 and 2012, the figure rose from $145,397 to $188,343. Those that have a subspecialty are getting more than this.
The road to becoming a doctor and finally obtaining internal medicine jobs may be long and hard, but it is very rewarding. General internists are very valuable in the healthcare system and in the community.

An Overview of ENT Jobs and Their Required Training

By

Ear, Nose and throat (ENT) health specialists, also referred to as Otolaryngologists, are medical practitioners who are trained in treating the disorders that affect the upper pharynx, face, neck, larynx, oral cavity and sinuses. These are the professionals who will treat nose bleeding, sinus conditions, tonsillectomies and many more conditions.
The journey to becoming an otolaryngologist begins with obtaining a high school diploma. After receiving the high school diploma, you should enroll in 4 year degree course. Although any degree would do, a premed degree is most favorable. At the undergraduate level, you should apply to take the Medical College Admission Test (or MCAT). Passing this exam with good scores will qualify you for admission to a medical school. It is important to note that there are limited medical schools and at the same time there are many applicants to those schools. This means that even after passing the MCAT exam, you will still be expected to apply to a number of medical schools before you can be accepted by any of them.
Training for ENT
Undergraduates who are successful with their MCATs are admitted to medical schools. It is important to ensure that the medical school is registered by the relevant authorities for example, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. It should be noted that most medical courses will take a period of 4 years to complete. In the first two years, the students will be involved in classwork and laboratory training. During this period, the students will take courses on anatomy, pathology, physiology, pharmacology and biochemistry. In the final years, students are expected to be engaged in clinical practice, which is usually conducted under the supervision of a registered and licensed medical faculty member.
After a successful completion of medical school, the next stage in becoming an Otolaryngologist is enrolling in a residency program. Before entering the residency program, the otolaryngologist will sit for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). It is after passing this exam that one is allowed to start residency training. Residency training will normally last for 5 years and is designed to prepare students to become researchers or physicians. During the residency period, the students will train on specialized areas of otolaryngology such as otology, rhinology, neck trauma, head trauma and endoscopy. From time to time, residents will conduct clinical rotations which are usually supervised by staff consultants. It is also important to note that otolaryngologist residents get the opportunity to train in sub-specialty training in areas like facial, reconstructive and plastic surgery.
After residency, otolaryngologists must seek licensure and certification just like other medical practitioners in order to be allowed to practice. It is important for otolaryngologists to review the specific requirements in the state in which they want to apply for licensure. If an otolaryngologist has any sub-specialties, then he must seek licensure in them too. Those ENTs who want to be certified will have to sit for a certification exam which is made up of oral and written sections. The certification exam is usually issued to test the ENTs on whether they have enough skills on topics such as imaging medical techniques, diagnosis, and morphology and research methodology.
Job outlook for ENTs
With the ever-increasing population, ENTs will never run out of jobs. They will be found working in hospitals, private medical offices and clinics. ENTs should be ready to work for long hours and also irregular working schedules. For example, an ENT will be called to attend to a patient at weird hours of the night. ENTs are expected to fit in well with other medical practitioners in their work environment for example general physicians, nurses, clinical officers, and so on. The most common conditions that an ENT will encounter include nerve disorders, ear infections, nose bleeding, ear pains, throat infections, and loss in physical balance due to a problem with the inner ear. Most of the conditions will be treated through therapy, medicine, and, on rare occasions, surgery.
Salaries for ENTs
ENTs are expected to make an average base salary of between $100,000 and $300,000 per year. ENTs will also benefit from bonuses from the institutions where they work. These bonuses will boost their earning. It is important to note that there are other factors that will determine how much an ENT earns. Such factors may include: level of education, years of experience, size of the organization where he works, and so on. ENTs who have professional qualifications and a longer experience will earn as much as $350,000 every year.
